Jobs tried to repackage the Mac as a business computer, but without a hard-drive or networking capabilities, not to mention only a small capacity for memory, corporations were not interested. In 1985, without any power in his own company, Jobs sold his stock in Apple and resigned.
Later in 1985, Jobs began NeXT Computer Co. with the money he'd made from the sale of his stock in Apple. He planned to build a computer to change the way research was done. The NeXT computer, though complete with processing speeds previously unseen, unmatched graphics, and an optical disk drive, at $9,950 each, sold poorly.
Persistent after the failures of the NeXT venture, Jobs began toying with software and started to focus his attention on a company he'd bought from George Lucas in 1986, Pixar Animation Studios. Jobs signed a three-picture deal with Disney, and began working on the first computer-animated feature. Released in the fall of 1995, it had taken "Toy Story" four years to be made. But the work had been well worth it, the film was an incredible success. Pixar went public in 1996, and in one day of trading, Jobs 80% share had become worth $1 billion.
Apple was struggling, having failed to design a new Macintosh operating system, and the company only held 5% of the PC market. Days after Pixar went public, Apple bought NeXT for $400 million and renamed Jobs to the board of directors to advise Gilbert F. Amelio, the chairman and CEO. However, in March of 1997, Apple recorded a quarterly loss of $708 million, and Amelio resigned a few months later. With an investment $150 million for a small stake in Apple, Apple and Microsoft would "cooperate on several sales and technology fronts", and Apple would be assured their continuation in the PC market.

Apple also turned its energies toward producing an inexpensive desktop, the iMac, that was another hit for the company. The NeXT computer, though complete with processing speeds previously unseen, unmatched graphics, and an optical disk drive, at $9,950 each, sold poorly.
Persistent after the failures of the NeXT venture, Jobs began toying with software and started to focus his attention on a company he'd bought from George Lucas in 1986, Pixar Animation Studios. Jobs signed a three-picture deal with Disney, and began working on the first computer-animated feature. Released in the fall of 1995, it had taken "Toy Story" four years to be made. But the work had been well worth it, the film was an incredible success. Pixar went public in 1996, and in one day of trading, Jobs 80% share had become worth $1 billion.
Apple was struggling, having failed to design a new Macintosh operating system, and the company only held 5% of the PC market. Days after Pixar went public, Apple bought NeXT for $400 million and renamed Jobs to the board of directors to advise Gilbert F. Amelio, the chairman and CEO. However, in March of 1997, Apple recorded a quarterly loss of $708 million, and Amelio resigned a few months later. Jobs was left in charge as interim CEO and it was up to him to keep the same company he had started and which had ousted him alive. So he made a deal with Microsoft. With an investment $150 million for a small stake in Apple, Apple and Microsoft would "cooperate on several sales and technology fronts", and Apple would be assured their continuation in the PC market.
Jobs also went to work improving the quality of the Apple computers. The introduction of the G3 Power PC microprocessor made the Apple faster than those computers operating on Pentium processors. Apple also turned its energies toward producing an inexpensive desktop, the iMac, that was another hit for the company. With Jobs once again in control, Apple was able to quickly turn itself around, and by the end of 1998, was bringing in $5.9 billion in sales. Jobs had returned to his first love, a little older and a little wiser. He had made Apple healthy again and returned it to a place where it was contributing new and innovative technologies to the computer world.

If you're interested in getting dial-up Internet, you may be in for a surprise. Many computers are now being sold without dial-up modems. You may want to be sure your modem is installed before you sign up for Internet service to avoid having problems once you're paying for Internet services. There are two ways to check for a dial-up modem, and it will be helpful to check both areas.
First, check your tower for a modem. From the back of the computer, look for a port that looks just like the phone jack in the wall. You need to have a regular phone cord to test whether the ports are for dial-up or broadband. There are three possibilities:
You see a port, but it looks slightly bigger and your phone cord doesn't fit tightly inside. This is your Ethernet port. It is for the cables you need for a broadband connection. This is not a modem. Look for another port.
You see two ports side by side. One should read “line� or show the outline of a phone port. The other reads “phone� or shows a picture of a telephone. This is your dial-up modem! For your dial-up connection, plug a phone cord from the jack in the wall into the “line� port. If you want a telephone beside your computer, plug its phone cord into the “phone� port in the back of the computer.
You see one telephone port and your phone cord fits in it. This is your dial-up modem! If you want to hook up a telephone as well, you will need a splitter in the phone jack in the wall and two phone cords: one going to the computer and the other to the telephone.
If you have no telephone ports, you will need to buy a dial-up modem that connects to a USB port. If you do have a modem, you must check whether your computer acknowledges that it is properly installed.
Open your control panel.
Open your modem options. Depending on your version of Windows, it may be called “Modems� or “Phone and Modem Options�. You may need to look under “Printers and Other Hardware� if you are using XP or Vista and you are currently in category view.
Click on the “Modems� tab.
You will see, “The following modems are installed:� and a white box listing whatever modems are or have been installed on your computer
Under the heading “Attached to�, does it say “COM� and a number? This means your computer recognizes that you have a modem installed. Does it say “not present�? This means that your modem is corrupted or not installed correctly. This will need to be resolved before you can connect to the Internet.
If you detect that you have a modem both physically installed in the tower and registering as installed in your computer, you are ready to order dial-up Internet. Although you are not guaranteed that you have a working modem, as other minor issues can occur, these steps indicate that you will most likely have no problems connecting. Your dial-up service technicians should be able to help you if there are further problems.

Considering how often fingers come into contact with computer keyboards, it's not surprising that a new study published in Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology found some pretty gross results.
Twenty-five computers from the University of North Carolina's (UNC) burn intensive care unit, cardiothoracic intensive care unit and six nursing units were tested for bacteria. The researchers found that every computer keyboard was contaminated with two or more microorganisms.
"Contamination of Keyboards is Prevalent"
The bacteria that was found was the type that could be detrimental to hospital patients:
All keyboards tested positive for a staph bacterium called coagulase-negative staphylococci. This is one of the most common causes of bloodstream infections among those hospitalized.
80 percent of keyboards contained diphtheroids. This bacteria represents a significant infection risk for those whose immune systems are weak, such as cancer and AIDS patients.
"Our data suggest that microbial contamination of keyboards is prevalent and that keyboards may be successfully decontaminated with disinfectants," the researchers said in their report.
Water and Disinfectants Help Clean Computer Keyboards
The researchers also put bacteria onto laptop computers, then attempted to remove the bacteria with various substances after 45 minutes. The researchers used a paper towel dampened with sterile water, alcohol or chlorine, or disinfecting wipes made by Clorox and Metrex.
It was found that all of the disinfectants, as well as the sterile water, removed or inactivated over 95 percent of the bacteria. The researchers said that the commercial wipes were effective for 48 hours, while the alcohol- and water-moistened paper towels were not effective in the long-term.
It should be noted that lead researcher William Rutala, PhD, MPH, has consulted for both Clorox and Metrex, while another of the study's researchers has consulted for Clorox.
Keyboards are Not the Only Germy Office Accessories
A series of studies called "Germs in the Workplace," found that the following four office surfaces had the most bacteria (in this order):
Phones
Desks
Computer keyboard
Computer mouse
Phones, computer keyboards and computer mice are self-explanatory; dirt from your hands and mouth gets transferred easily on to these items. Desks make the list not only because of the hand-to-surface contact, but also because they're used for so many different purposes throughout the day.
"Desks are really bacteria cafeterias," said Dr. Charles Gerba, who led the study. "They're breakfast buffets, lunch tables and snack bars, as we spend more and more hours at the office. Germ levels on desks could be considered a business liability."
How to Keep Your Computer Keyboard and Office Germ-Free and Healthy
Researchers of the UNC study suggested cleaning hospital keyboards daily, or when visibly soiled. They also recommended cleaning the keyboard with a disinfectant wipe before a new person uses it.
