How to Take the Headache Out of "Why is My Computer So Slow All of a Sudden?"

By: Winston Mah

Have you tried to download a document or a picture from your social network and find out that you consume hours of time in front of the computer doing very little work? Then you ask the question "why is my computer so slow all of a sudden?" every time you operate your PC.

If you are experiencing this problem, you may want to look at two things. When your computer is running slow, it maybe because your computer processing power is very slow or there is the presence of a malicious ware, worms or viruses. It is really frustrating when a computer starts to slow down, especially when you are trying to download a document or a software in your computer. There were studies that show many of the computer users slowing down with their productivity because the computer memory can not handle the data and the processor can not read the data as quick as should be. For example, you are trying to view a photo in your social network and it doesn't download in an instant. Another instance is when you try to open a website and it does not open easily. Let us examine why computer slows down.

It becomes a general knowledge that a personal computer slow down because it's become obsolete. When this happens, the computer can not process the data the way it should be. This is not a very soon scenario though for many computers. Most computers today are engineered to be useful in the five or ten years. However, when your computer is very old like the first computer models, it may not have the capacity to run a program fully, if not completely failing to run it. For instance, not all XP computers can run Vista because their memory and processing power may not be adequate to do so. The types of software that can run in your computer are determined by the parts it has (motherboard, processor, memory, etc.) as well as the available memory that your system has. One of the common reasons that a computer is slowing down is because it is using a program that is so big for its processor to operate properly. It is advisable to use bigger processors when using a program that has a heavy workload with graphics. The bigger its processor, the faster is the computer functionality.

The other reason why some personal computer runs to slow even it has a satisfactory system parts is that it may have too many programs and software, more than the memory and processor's capabilities. Browsing unsecure websites can cause you to download malicious software that slows down your computer speed. Loading your computer with heavy graphics software like games can also cause it to slow down.

The solution to this problem is to just delete all unnecessary programs. This frees a lot of memory space. With Malwares in your PC, buy credible software cleaner and anti-virus software. These are the general slow computer fixes that can be done without calling for a technician.

Everything You Always Wanted to Know About "Why Does My Computer Freeze Up?"

By: Winston Mah

As a technical support specialist, a day would not be complete without any of these questions from the customers calling for help:

"My computer keeps on freezing. What shall I do?"

"My computer keeps freezing up! Help!"

I even received two emails that is so witty and made me think hard as well:

"Stop! Freeze!"

"Stop computer freeze. Please!"

So many inquiries, questions, issues but it all boils down to two major things that we need to do most of the time: keen observation and maintenance. Go back to the basics and don't think it over too much why it is doing so. It is no rocket science. Might be simple to say but it is really simple. Here are the things we need to do:

OBSERVE.

Think outside of the box, they say. The reason might not be in your computer but actually the hardware part of it. There might be too many things attached to your computer, wherein these things are turned on but you are not using them, and the latter is working too hard with the programs running at the same in your computer. These could also lead to conflicting with Windows allocated resources to multiple devices to those devices attached to your pc. Turn them off when you are not using them or at least unplug them while the computer is turned off and restart your computer once again.

Another thing to observe is if there is a new hardware that was attached to your computer recently and after doing so, your computer started to freeze up. For instance, the video card specifications might be too high for your CPU or it is not getting enough power from your power supply. Do check with your computer manufacturer what is the best upgrade for your hardware before buying any. The repair might cost you even more.

After checking the hardware part, it is now time for you to check the software part. A lot of reasons why the computer is acting so: too many programs running in the background, numerous startup programs / icons loaded, unneeded files and cookies eating up your memory, erroneous driver that needs updating, programs that are still residing in your pc that you no longer need that might be conflicting with your other programs and viruses.

The next thing to do is MAINTENANCE.

Once in a while, spare some time to check your computer. Prevention is better than cure. First, which is the easiest thing to do is to clean up your computer with unwanted files or cookies. These are files that are automatically loaded in your pc while you are surfing the net which you don't really need. Do this often, at least thrice a week so your computer won't pile up with unnecessary files and still have room for important ones.

Next is to check for the loaded start up program or icons on your desktop. While your computer is booting up, you might notice it takes time before you can actually use your pc. Are there too many icons displayed on your desktop? If so, remove the icons that you no longer need. These won't actually delete the program. The program would still be in your program files it is just the icon that you are deleting. However, if it is a file you chose to save in your desktop and you think it is important, you can try to move it in your unused desktop folder (if you can't see one on your desktop, create a new folder with the same title) and access it just when you need it. This will help minimize the clutter on your desktop.

Are there too many startup programs to load or too many programs running in the background? For startup programs, all of these will need to be loaded first before you can use your PC. Try to check if you need all of these programs once your computer starts. If not, you can use msconfig utility to reduce the programs that are running on startup. You can also use this utility to disable any programs that you don't really use or you don't want running while you are using your computer.

Another thing to watch out for is the programs still residing in your PC which you no longer use. Try removing them using the Add/remove programs. These can be your old antivirus programs version, previous version of your device driver, etc.

Worst of all, this can be an issue with malwares or virus. Always run your antivirus software to check your PC for any presence of virus / spywares. Do check, too, if your antivirus is up-to-date. If not, it is not configured to detect any new viruses that can crash your pc. Additionally, make sure that the firewall on this software is also enabled to protect you from hackers and any malicious activity that can invade your PC.

If all else fails, try visiting / calling your computer manufacturer or go to any of your nearest computer center to check your PC.

Viruses are multiplying and spreading through the technology world at lighting speeds. It is almost impossible to keep up with all the new virus threats that are out there today. The best and smartest thing to do when you want to download or open a file is to run a scan and check for viruses. Knowing and trusting a source is great but it does not always mean everything from them is safe. There are hundreds of hackers out that that want to cause heartache to the unknowing soul by infecting their computer. Do not feel like you are immune to computer viruses because no one is.

Software companies have worked hard to develop applications to help rid computer systems and networks of existing computer viruses. They have even gone as far as offering software that will also prevent viruses from taking up residence in a system. Some companies have focused their efforts directly on some of the culprits such as spyware and adware, creating applications solely for these viruses.

Many internet providers have begun to offer free virus protection software for their clients. There is even some computer distributors that load new computers with trial versions of virus removal and protections software on the computers. Typically virus software can be used on a trial basis to see if it provides you with everything you want and may need in order to combat computer viruses. Just be sure that you have some type of virus protection.

Computers can be found all over the world and are used anywhere from businesses to everyday personal life. Computers play a big role in many businesses and assist with production and productivity in the work force; therefore it is critical to protect computers from any type of virus that could ruin them. The evolving profession of computer technicians

By: Sunil Punjabi

Computer technicians manage everybody's computer problems. They participate in all aspects of computer management, starting from installing machines and networks in homes and offices, to getting rid of old machines that have outlived their use. They will attend to all computer maintenance needs like virus removal, data recovery, part replacement, and upgradation.

computer technicians are basically divided into two groups, namely bench technicians and field technicians. The former works in the computer services facility that employs them, and repairs computers that are brought to the facility for repair or upgrading. The latter are more into providing onsite help, working at the customer's facility where the computer is kept.

Both types of computer technicians generally handle both hardware and software problems. The main difference is that bench technicians will have more tools at their disposal to work on the problems. Since field technicians have to move around from one place to another, it becomes difficult for them to carry too much testing equipments and repair tools with them.

computer technicians working from the service center will provide online help also. Using the IP address of the computer and login ID and password, a technician will be able to access the customer's computer from his workstation and make out the problem and do the repair through remote access itself.

Some formal training is necessary to become a computer technician. Many technical schools have associate degree courses that train technicians. Companies that provide computer services also train their own technicians while military and paramilitary organizations also have facilities for additional training to computer technicians who have some basic training.

Needless to say, technicians should know everything about hardware, software, networking, and basics of programming. Networking+, A+, and various Microsoft certifications are the courses recommended to become a computer technician. However, hands-on training is necessary to do any ob efficiently and employers ensure that their technicians get it before they are sent out on field jobs. By working as bench computer technicians in the beginning, they are able to have access to more tools and take help from senior staff on repair techniques that they are not familiar with.

A technician has got to learn continuously. Nowhere does technology change as fast as in the computer field. Most often, before sellers and users become fully familiar with the existing operating system and hardware features, markets have more sophisticated things to offer. The result is that the entire career life of computer technicians will involve as much learning as using the acquired knowledge. Computer professionals have to grow with the profession.

A computer technician should be ready to work at all times of the day because emergency calls may come at any time. Many service centers offer round the clock computer support and technicians working for them should be ready to attend the calls at all times of the day. As in other professions, computer technicians have also got to be courteous with the customers. If the problem is not immediately solvable, he should be able to help in getting the user a substitute machine during the interim period.

PCSoft is a Sydney based computer repairs, maintenance, and Services Company and provides same day onsite pc repairs and support services anywhere in Sydney and its suburbs. We can send a computer technician to your home or office for onsite assistance. Our team of expert, experienced and certified computer technicians is just a phone call away.

Turn old computers into new with computer upgrades

By: Sunil Punjabi

All aspects of a computer like its memory, size, speed, graphics options, and screen resolution, are improving every day. The result is that after hardly two years of using a computer, the user starts to feel that he is using an oxcart in the jet age. Though there will be some differences between the old and new models, it is not as wide it is touted to be. Proper computer upgrades will bridge the gap and make the old one give good service for another two years.

Whether it is the owner himself, or any computer services center that is doing the computer upgrades, it is important to know the type of memory of the present computer. There are several types of RAM available in the market, and computers are designed in a way as to support only one particular type of memory. The manufacturers of the computer will be able to give the information on the type of RAM supported by the computer.

computer services centers will have their own tools to check the memory type. For owners who do not have in-depth knowledge of computers, there are certain online tools that help in checking the memory type of a computer. If you feed it the name of the manufacturer, product line and model, it will return with the type of memory used in it.

Besides RAM, the other things that are changed while doing computer upgrades are video card and hard drive. The power of the video card is altered either by completely replacing the card or by adding RAM to it. The changed video card, that has its own processor and increased RAM, will substantially enhance the speed and quality of graphic operations.

A hard drive upgrade is a must for all types of computer upgrades. By increasing the hard disk space, much more data can be stored, and new programs can be installed. It will also speed up the computer. Hard disk can be upgraded either by completely replacing it, or by keeping the old one intact and adding a new one. The former is the better option, the only problem being that it will entail the additional job of copying the matter from the old drive to the new drive.

Computer owners may not be able to avoid computer upgrades altogether, even if they are happy with the speed and screen and size of their present computer. New software, which require increased disk space and memory to function, are mushrooming in the market. Offices may need to use these to increase their business returns. It will be more economically viable for them to go in for computer upgrades than to buy a new machine to accommodate the software.

While any computer upgrade will involve an increase in hard drive space, if the user's operations are not graphic related, he may not need to change the video cared. When you get a computer services company to do the upgradation job, they will be able to advise you as to which components you need to upgrade to ensure optimum computer performance in the type of job you are doing.

PCSoft is a Sydney based computer repairs, maintenance, and computer services Company and provides same day onsite pc repairs, computer upgrades and support services anywhere in Sydney and its suburbs. We can send a computer technician to your home or office for onsite assistance. Our team of expert, experienced and certified computer technicians is just a phone call away.

Searching For Used Computers -Tips When Buying One

By: Adriana Noton

You might need a computer right now and might be thinking used computers - tips when buying one. There are several reasons you would consider buying a used computer. Money though it probably your main reason. There are many sources where you can find used computers for sale.

You might be starting your school or business year. Either way you will need money for a lot of other reasons so you might want to save money buying a used computer.

You can see that in some cases you can actually save up to two thirds on a used computer compare to some of the new models available now. You are not the only one looking at used computers. Selling used computers is a big market. But you want to be careful. You do not want to make a mistake and then have to buy a new computer because the used one you thought would save you money failed on you.

So here are some tips. You want to stay with the major brand of computers when looking at the used ones out there. The better known the brand the easier you will be able to get replacement parts. And the computer might still have a warranty on it. You might be able to replace broken parts at no cost or a small cost if the warranty is still in effect. But you may have also heard about refurbished computers.

There are also computers that are refurbished models. These are computers rebuilt, usually by the brand manufacturer, with new components. The refurbished computer also might come with a limited warranty which is better than no warranty at all. This option might be more expensive than a used computer option but it is still less expensive than a new computer.

Ask the seller if the computer you are looking at is used or refurbished. Here are some practical items to consider. Make sure the computer boots up properly and all the software boots up quickly and correctly. Try out the mouse, especially on a laptop to see it is working properly. Check the monitor and the key board for correct typing.

Check the video, sound devices and graphics. They all should be in proper working order. You may be looking at a stolen computer and not know it. Make sure you get for your money all the related software documents and licenses to the computer. You want to buy from someone who will agree to you having the computer for a few days to make sure it is running smoothly.

Take the computer home and use it. Examine it for any problems. You can even take it to a friend who knows about computers and let him look at it for you. Remember used computers are good buys only if it does for you what you bought it for. If you have to replace it because it does not function correctly you can be out money and time.

Registry cleaning: The problem may be that the registry of your computer needs to be cleaned. The Windows registry contains information for configuring your computer. This is not something you want to mess with if you do not understand, but do not despair. There is an answer. There are ways for the average person to clean the recording on his computer.

Than good. There are few signs that the registry must be cleaned.

Here are the most common symptoms of a registry to be cleaned:

- Your computer seems to run much slower than before.
- You receive error messages unjustified.
- Classified ads seem to appear most often when you surf the Internet.
- You see Active X or "Unable to load" errors.
- Your computer displays a blue screen, freezes or crashes frequently.

There are cleaning programs that scan the registry to find the registry entries that are invalid, empty or corrupted, then delete them safely. This will often correct problems and make your computer may seem like new again.

This can save the need to reformat your hard drive or reinstall the Windows. Use a good cleansing program registry can be much safer, quicker and easier than trying to do it manually yourself. There is a free down loadable program called "registry cleaner" to clean your computer's registry.

Install antivirus program: One of the best things you can do to your computer is to install an antivirus program. These programs are constantly scanning your computer to verify any potential Trojan horses, viruses or other problems that may occur with your computer software. Many anti-virus products include both a feature scan line to detect problems when they arrive on the computer.

However, in other cases you may need to plan or carry yourself scanning. Always run your anti-virus computers at least once a week to detect any potential security risks. An anti-spyware program may be your best friend. Spyware is one of the most common problems that slow your computer.

Spyware may be logging your keystrokes as you are logged into your online bank account or registering only the websites you visit while beaming the data to a mainframe.

Spyware is usually easily removed, however, it is sometimes so deeply rooted in the registry files that you must have Windows repair software to remove it. Spyware usually likes to hide in the system folders, and may even resemble a process running normally. Be sure to pay special attention to all processes that seem unusual in the window manager of your task.

Free Disk Space: Each computer comes with a hard drive. Most of them are now over 100 GB in size. Your hard drive should never be more than 50% of space used. Why? It will take longer for the system to access files and folders when there is more to search.

In addition, the operating system (Windows) requires a fixed amount of space for things like temporary files; recycle bins, etc. so make sure you delete unnecessary files from your hard drive.

They can be transferred to media such as CD / DVDs, flash drives, external hard drive, and the list continues.

Defragment the hard drive: This is a necessary step to maintain the speed of your machine. Fragments of data and software applications are stored in various corners of the disk. The PC will soon begin to lag. Running a disk defragmentation takes all the data fragments and moves.

They are placed side by side with other fragments of the same file or application. What this does is simple, instead of searching the entire hard drive for the next fragment of a file, now just go to the next fragment. Run a defragmentation of your hard drive regularly. Once a month should be sufficient.

defragment window

Remove temporary files: These files are distributed over your entire system designed to contain temporary information that can be removed later. Your operating system uses temporary files and applications like Internet Explorer. As time passes, your computer is cluttered with unnecessary information that can be downloaded again if necessary. Clearing the temporary files once a month will make some of the necessary space on the disk and improve the speed of your computer.

Why Is My Computer So Slow? – Registry Cleanup Download Software

By: Andrew Pekar

Do you often ask yourself "why is my computer so slow"? Almost every computer user has no idea why their computer slows down. I knew I was looking for answers in the past because my computer would slow down for no apparent reason. Some people told me that it was due to spyware on my computer, but clearing my spyware had no effect on my computer's performance. It was then that I figured out the problem must be coming from within the system.

1. Why Does A Computer Slow Down?

After doing more extensive research in online websites and forums, I learnt that a majority of computer slowdown cases were caused by errors in the computer registry. Most people do not know what the registry is for, or how it can slow down a computer.

2. What Is The Computer Registry?

The registry files in the computer contain the instructions and settings to tell your hardware and software how to run correctly. When an application is executed, the computer will proceed to look for the right registry keys. Over time, the registry will contain more errors, or the registry keys may become messy after the system has moved them multiple times. When the system finds missing or corrupted entries, it will start to slow down tremendously, or even crash.

3. How To Fix Your Computer Registry?

Fixing your computer is easy, but you should not attempt to do it yourself unless you are experienced with changing registry settings. I download a top rated registry cleaner and it scanned my computer before revealing the hundreds of errors in my computer registry. About 10 minutes later, my computer was cleaned up, and its processing speed was significantly increased. My computer felt like it was brand new again. For a list of the top registry cleaners on the market, visit my website link at the end of this article to learn more.

4. Maintaining Your Registry

After your

registry has been cleaned up, you should still do maintenance on it. Set your registry cleaner to do a scan and fix once every few weeks to keep your computer running smoothly. Fix your registry files and make your computer run like new again!

Why Is My Computer Running Slow? – Top Registry Cleaner

By: Austin Porter

Do you ask yourself "why is my computer running slow?", and get frustrated by your slow computer? There can be many causes for a slow computer, and some of them are very common and most probably happening to your computer right now. This article will talk about the main reasons why a computer can slow down, and what you can do to fix it.

Cause #1: Computer Registry Errors

This is the most common reason why a computer can slow down over time. Many computer users have no idea how to maintain their computer registry, and do not understand its importance. The computer registry contains registry files that give your programs the instructions they need to run. Over time, most of the entries become corrupted and messy, and your computer will need a long time to find the right entries. In more serious cases, the computer will freeze if the entries are completely missing.

To fix your computer registry, you can download a registry cleaner and ask it to check your registry for errors. Once the errors are found, you can get the registry cleaner to clean out the errors. The whole process takes about 10 minutes. After using a registry cleaner on my own computer, my computer has been running like new again. If you want to see the list of the top 5 registry cleaners on the internet, visit the website link at the end of the article to find out more.

Cause #2: Spyware and Adware

This is another reason why a computer may slow down. It is reported that almost every computer that has access to the internet will be infected with spyware and adware. These files stay on your computer to collect information about your surfing habits, and send the information back to its main site. 1 or 2 pieces of spyware will not cause a problem, but if your computer is infected by 100s of spyware, it will run slow.

To get rid of spyware, you can download spyware cleaners like Spybot Search and Destroy, and scan and remove all the spyware on your computer.

Cause #3: Virus Infection

A virus infection can also cause a computer to run slow. If you know that you have been to free download websites for music or game files, there is a chance that you could have opened a virus file. To remove the virus in your computer, you will need to use anti-virus software to do the job. You can do a search on the web to find anti-virus software for your computer. Some of the best anti-virus software include Norton, MacAfee and AVG Free. Try to do a backup of your most important files if you think that your computer may have a virus.

How To Scan And Clean Your Computer? – Speed Up Slow Computer

By: Austin Porter

Are you looking to scan and clean your computer? A computer needs to be maintained regularly; otherwise it can start to slow down very quickly. This was one of the problems I encountered with my PC before, because I did not know how to maintain my PC. Nowadays, I maintain my computer at least 2 times a week to make sure that it continues to run quickly and smoothly.

This article will discuss several ways to scan and clean your computer, in order to keep it in optimal condition.

1. Cleaning Out Your Registry

Your computer registry is probably very messy and corrupt if you have never done any maintenance on your computer before. If you have used your computer for about a year now, chances are that your computer problems are caused by the computer registry errors.

After downloading and using a registry cleaner myself, my computer has not been giving me any more error messages. If you need to get a free registry scan, you can visit my website link below to download a top rated registry cleaner.

2. Removing Spyware and Adware

This is the number 2 cause of computer errors and slow speed. Spyware are sneaky programs that hide in your computer, and are not meant for you to know that they are there. These things are usually in software that you download from the internet. If you want to get rid of the spyware on your computer, you can use Spybot Search & Destroy, which is a free antispyware, to do the job.

3. Free Up Disk Space On Your Computer

You may have many applications and programs that you have installed in your computer that you do not use anymore. These programs are taking up extra disk space on your computer, and can cause your computer to run slower. You should look to uninstall these programs to ensure a better PC performance.

4. Delete Your Temporary Files

The files in your temporary folder may have accumulated to a large number, if you have never cleared them before. These files can be cleared by using the disk cleanup tool on your computer, or by deleting the files from your "temp" folder.

This temp folder can be found in My Computer->Local disk->Documents and settings->Username->Local Settings. This folder might be hidden. If it is, you will need to change the view settings to allow you to see hidden folders. Be careful not to delete the entire temp folder though, just the files inside the folder.

The One Computer Classroom

By: Chris Beal

The following inquiry was posed and the responses are below:

"I'm going to present a workshop in August to teachers in my district on what to do if you have only one computer in the classroom.  Any suggestions or resources you might have?"

Davidson software bought out Roger Wagner a while back, he published a good book on the "One Computer Classroom".  Do a web search for info.

One good method is to have kids work on off line assignments in a small

group that requires them to write, draw, research or design something, then have them use the appropriate software/hardware tolls on the computer to create the final draft of the project.  Assign various roles, so each member of the group completes a part of the project and has a chance to use the machine for the good of the group.

One concern that teachers frequently have is how will they keep track of

which students have used the computer and which haven't in a particular week or for a particular project.  To help you can show them how - use 2 soup cans, one labeled "I have used the computer" and the other "I haven't used the computer"; they then create one popcycle sticks for each student.  When each student has used the computer, the stick gets moved to the "have used" can.  The same strategy can be applied with poster board and clothes ins.

Another helpful tip is to teach teachers how to use students as watchers,

doers, and teachers.  For example, the teacher first teaches 3 students how to do the activity on the computer.  One student becomes the teacher

(probably the strongest student), one is the doer and one is the watcher.

Then as one student finishes on the computer, he/she becomes the teacher,

the watcher becomes the doer, and a new student rotates in as the watcher. This frees up the teacher's time to implement and monitor other activities in the classroom.

Tom Snyder productions offers a workshop like this and they give out a book that has great activities.  It is called the One Computer Classroom.  You may be able to get it from them and use in your workshop.

Go to the following site at Furman University:

http://www.furman.edu/~pecoy/aam/index.htm

Select Resources and The One Computer Classroom. This is a great listing.

I could say a lot but I'll just mention "Tom Snyder" at

http://www.tomsnyder.com/

Particular attention to their Decisions, Decisions series and the Great

Solar System Rescue and Great Ocean Rescue type of packages they sell.

The one computer classroom makes a great learning center. I have done some of the following.

Prepare PowerPoint presentations that demonstrate a skill set that you want your students to learn. Use it to model the work done in class. It becomes a record that students can refer back to if they need more review. For examples of this refer to Jerry Suave's work on our technology grant the past year. He did some excellent examples while learning to use PowerPoint to teach multiplication and division.

http://www.grps.k12.mi.us/technology/tlcg/Participants/homepage.spml

Here's also another unit plan about weather,

http://www.grps.k12.mi.us/technology/tlcg/weather/.

Current Events, choose a student or group of students to read, print and

share a current event with the class. You can choose the newspaper. Most of them are online.

http://dir.yahoo.com/News_and_Media/Newspapers/

http://www.funbrain.com is a great resource. Not only do you have many fun practice exercises in every subject area, but the activities are evaluated for age appropriate ability levels. Funbrain.com also offers a test maker for the teacher. In the one computer classroom, you can have students complete this test one at a time, when you get to the computer lab or students can log in at home. Funbrain scores the tests for you. I think this is a good way for you to also conduct surveys with your students.

Teach your students about databases and spreadsheets. The class can work

together to research statistical data and then input the facts into a

database. Now show students the benefit of organizing information this way. Over time collect information from several research projects and use the results to create learning centers that will require the students to use the databases or spreadsheets. I like to create laminated question cards that can be pulled from a box. These cards are numbered and I have punch-holed answer keys in my desk for quick checking.

A co-worker and myself presented a workshop at the Kid's Who Know and Do

Conference this year on the one computer classroom (and we have each taught in that format before). The web site we created is still up.  The URL is http://www.co-nect.net/workshops/kwkd.  Feel free to look it over and if I can be of any help explaining our approach, I'll be glad to do that.  I also have a presentation on the SCAN's Report which is a nice intro into the why!

Dust Kills Cleaning the Unit Fan is Essential Computer Care

By: Bob Hall

Between taking care of the household, the kids, the pets, and the district PTA, computer care is probably one of the last things that you think of doing on a regular basis.  Without a regular maintenance schedule however, you could find out (the hard way) that a neglected computer is an energy hog - one that works harder than it needs to and one that could be a financial burden to replace.

Let's talk about maintaining hardware.  So much emphasis is put on maintaining a computer's operating system that we sometimes forget how important it is to maintain a computer's hardware components. Since there can be quite a few components to take care of, let's talk about the most important one.

The most important component of a computer's hardware system is its fan. The fan is located on the computer's CPU unit and when that thing gets clogged with dirt and dust, it can run down a computer faster than you can say, "Something's wrong with my computer and I don't know what it is!" In short, the fan is responsible for keeping a computer's motor cool and this motor is what keeps the computer's hard drive and peripherals functioning the way you need them to, which translates to "fast."

A dirty fan doesn't rotate fast enough to keep that motor cool and a completely clogged fan just stops rotating altogether. This causes the computer's motor to work harder - and a harder working motor can raise the electric bill! Worst case scenario: the motor can overheat and stop working as well. No motor equals no computer.

Keep your computer's fan clean by preventing the fan from getting dirty or dusty in the first place. Use the computer in a dust-free environment and never smoke around it. Nicotine and tar mean certain death when it comes to computer fans, however should you find a need to clean the fan, do so with extreme care.

It's quite easy to cause more damage from cleaning so if you're not comfortable with cleaning your PC yourself, take it to a shop for servicing. Otherwise, you can unplug and disassemble the computer to do it yourself.

You'll need a can of compressed air and an anti-static rag to remove stubborn clumps of dust. Hold the can perfectly vertical and spray the fan being careful not to spray the dust off the fan onto other sensitive parts of the computer like circuit boards or inside the motor casing. Wipe up remaining dust with your anti-static rag and then reassemble the computer.

One thing that you certainly don't want to use to remove computer dust is a vacuum cleaner. Although using a vacuum cleaner seems to make more sense, the strong suction of a vacuum cleaner can actually spark damaging static electricity or dislodge loose cables. You also don't want to use oil-based cleaners. Although Pledge may dust your wooden tables and cabinets to a perfect shine, the oil inside a cleaner like this will erode sensitive computer parts. Stick to a liquid-free dusting method and your dusting routine will be safe enough to repeat as often as you need.

As previously mentioned, preventing dust from entering the computer is extremely important and will reduce the need to open and dust your system in the first place. The severity of outside elements (smoking, humidity, pets, etc.) will ultimately determine how often you'll need to de-dust your machine. But as an average, you shouldn't need to perform this procedure any more than once or twice a year.

The entire exercise should take no more than twenty minutes tops and once complete, you'll immediately see and hear the difference in your machine. The computer's keyboard and mouse will run more smoothly, hardware won't take as long to connect, and the entire machine won't be as loud as one that's corroded with ugly dust bunnies.

Computer Operating Systems

By: Clive Harman

Computer operating systems have evolved over the years to become one of the most integral software components of a computer system.  Without the operating system, being able to use a personal computer would be much more difficult.  The operating system allows the user to easily and more successfully navigate the computer system without having to know complicated commands and requests.

In the early days of computers, operating systems weren't part of the overall system configuration.  They came about after the super computers had already been invented.  Before operating systems, information was input into the computer with punch cards.  The system wasn't very efficient and required knowledge of punch card machines just to get the desired information from the computer.

Then some programmers had a vision.  They thought it would be wonderful if everyone could use a computer without having to know about complicated programming language.  They began designing the first computer operating systems, and soon found success.

Today, there are many computer operating systems both already developed as well as currently in development.  Most of these operating systems are designed solely with the user in mind.  They allow computer operators to simply load programs into their computers and then navigate their system with the point of a mouse and the click of a button.

All computer operating systems have certain processes that they perform "behind the scenes" so that the user doesn't really know that they are happening.  This is called multi-tasking and makes it much easier to use a computer without having to manage resources manually.  The operating system does it for you!

Your computer operating system will manage your random access memory, your hard disk memory, the scheduling of tasks, and so much more!  It will provide a level of security to your computer so that you don't have to worry about an outside party gaining access to any of the information on your computer.  It will also navigate the various programs that are on your computer when you want to open those programs.  Just tell the operating system, and it'll take care of the rest!

The most popular operating systems today are Microsoft Windows and Apple's Mac OS X.  The technology for most computer operating systems came from these two computer giants and other operating systems have evolved from those.  Linux and GNU are two other operating systems that are beginning to take hold in popularity, although they are mainly geared toward the mainframe and network system market.

The computer operating system brought personal computers into our homes and businesses and made it easy for anyone to use a computer.  Without the computer operating system, using a computer would remain in the dark ages.
