For the last couple of decades, the rapid advances in computing technology have given rise to a corresponding problem of computers becoming quickly obsolete. These days, any computer that is more than 3 years old will be noticeably slower in its performance than a computer that has been manufactured in the last few months. It has therefore become a fact of life in the information age that computers need to be updated on a regular basis in order to utilize the latest software and communications applications. This in turn has led to the problem of what one should do with the rapidly growing stockpile of old computers and other electronic equipment. A company or individual really has one of 3 choices: 1. Do nothing; 2 Donate or; 3. Recycle. This article will discuss each of the options in turn.

Before looking closely at the issue of computer equipment recycling, it is worthwhile noting why it so important to do something rather than nothing. Latest studies on the subject have concluded that only around 10-15% of old computer equipment is being recycled. The equipment that isn't being recycled is either being stored, gathering dust on the tops of cupboards or in garages, or even more perniciously is being disposed of in landfills.

Companies that are storing old computing equipment are entertaining a false economy. It is actually more expensive to continue to store old computers than it is to properly dispose of them - when you take into account the cost of storage space, the cost of securing old systems to comply with federal privacy laws and other associated administration costs. There are the also environmental concerns attached to the stockpiling of large quantities of obsolete computers. The systems can break down and leak hazardous materials into the air, soil and groundwater should they catch on fire or be subject to other natural disasters such as a floods.

The larger problem however, lies in disposing of this old computer equipment in a heedless fashion. Computer equipment that isn't taken care of by an authorized computer recycler is most likely to end up in landfills and become toxic computer waste. A computer is made up of plastic, ferrous metals, non-ferrous metals (lead, cadmium, antimony, beryllium, chromium and mercury), electronic boards (gold, palladium, silver and platinum) and glass - in short, materials (many of which are toxic) which don't break down naturally. A standard sized cathode ray tube (CRT) monitor contains more than two kilos of lead - the toxicity of which has been well known for centuries.

The best option when dealing with old computer equipment is to either donate it (computer hardware less than 5 years old can generally be donated) or to recycle it.

Individuals who are looking to recycle one or a few items of computer hardware will find that nearly all of the major computer manufacturers - Apple, Dell, Gateway, IBM, Lexmark, Hewlett Packard, Epson, NEC - are running some type of computer recycling program. These programs tend to involve the company taking back your old computer and disposing of it responsibly, at no extra cost to yourself, whenever you purchase a new computer from them.

For companies who are looking to dispose of large volumes of computer hardware (and other types of e-waste) they should really get in contact with an authorized computer recycler. The hallmark of the computer recycler's business model is that of responsible destruction. They will salvage all useful computer parts before breaking down what's left, safely removing all hazardous materials in the process. You should always avoid unnecessary start up programs .Whenever you install a program on your computer, I think you have seen that it tries to show up every time you start your computer. Let come what may, this will retard the speed of your computer. What you must do is always to avoid them to start without your knowledge because they are also using an unnecessary amount of RAM on your computer.

· The first thing to do is to run a disk clean up………… How do you do this?..

Go to Start

Then to Programs

Then Accessories

Then to System tools and then lastly click on Disk Cleanup.

This will automatically show you all the files that need to be removed and the space you will gain after removing those files..

· Ever heard disk defragmentation? The amount of the data you put into your computer is scattered on your computer hard disk and what is needed is to make it come together so that the computer doesn't use a lot of force to get the expected data through different paths. A Brief History of Computer Graphics

The use of computer graphics can be traced as far back as 1940, when Jay Forrester at M.I.T. designed equipment for training new pilots. The digital computer was chosen as the ideal instrument, because of its adaptability and the flexibility with which the machine could be programmed. It was not until a few years later that a radar defense system project named Whirlwind showed the first practical use of computer graphics (see fig. 1.2). Whirlwind is a computer linked to radar sites, and it displays an electronic map of the location on its monitor with plot blips that represent incoming airplanes. Whirlwind is the first vacuum-tube computer capable of drawing lines and points on a computer screen.

In 1958, an experimental filmmaker, John Whitney, Sr.,created a short animation by using the analog computer to control the movement of the character. Whitney used the same system to create the opening title sequence of Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo. Later Whitney and his brother produced more films based on similar techniques.

In 1957, Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) opened its company with only three employees. Three years later, DEC introduced the PDP-1 (Programmed Data Processor), the world's first small interactive computer (see Fig. 1.3). DEC has played a huge role in the development of computer graphics. "The Programmed Data Processor (PDP-1) is a high-speed, solid state digital computer designed to operate with many types of input-output devices with no internal machine changes. It is a single address, single instruction, and stored program computer with powerful program features. Five-megacycle circuits, a magnetic core memory and fully parallel processing make possible a computation rate of 100,000 additions per second. The PDP-1 is unusually versatile.

IBM helped General Motors to develop DAC-1 to showcase General Motors' automobiles at the Joint Computer Conference in Detroit in 1964. The breakthrough came when Ivan Sutherland at M.I.T. created a computer drawing program called Sketchpad in 1961. Sketchpad is the father of all CAD programs. Sutherland created this sketching program for his doctoral thesis at M.I.T. Lincoln Laboratory. Sketchpad allowed users to draw simple shapes on the computer with a light pen. The light pen used a small photoelectric cell in its tip to emit an electronic pulse when the pen was placed in front of a computer screen. Many software companies still use Sutherland's Sketchpad program's interface today. This was the first instance in the history of computer graphics that demonstrated the possibility of Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD). Sutherland's Sketchpad was a perfect example of vector-based graphics comprising lines rather than being based on pixels.

The first video game was created by a student, Steve Russel, at M.I.T. in 1961. Spacewar was the world's first video arcade game that was written for the DEC's PDP-1. Later DEC packaged Spacewar with every new unit, so the world's first video game was run on DEC. By the end of the 1960s, CADD began to appear in the mechanical, civil, chemical, and automobile industries. However, such advancement in digital technology had not captivated the field of architecture. The main reason for the delay was perhaps the high cost associated with CAD systems at the time.

Major corporations such as TRW, General Electric, Lockheed-Georgia and Sperry Rand began to use computer graphics. IBM introduced the first commercially available graphics computer, the IBM 2250 graphics terminal, as a result of the new found interest in computer graphics.

In 1963, the mouse was being invented by Doug Englebart of the Stanford Research Institute. At the same time, the digitizing tablet was being developed. Both the mouse and the digitizing tablet are 2D point devices; therefore you need to switch X and Y coordinates to access a Z coordinate. True 3D pointing devices come at a high cost, which is a major reason why the mouse is still a popular pointing device today. Products such as Spaceball by 3Dconnexion or 3D Controller by Logitech prove effective in 3D space. These products enable the user to pan, zoom and rotate 3D models with accurate control of the design process.

To follow is a list of important events in the 1960s that profoundly affected the future of computer graphics.
1961- Whitney produced the title sequence for Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo by using an analog computer.
1963- Doug Englebart invented the world's first mouse. At about the same time, the digitizing tablet was developed.
1966- Ralph Baer at Sanders Associates created a first video game for consumers. The same year, Sutherland at MIT invented the computer-controlled head-mounted display system. Many years later, this device is being used for virtual reality study.
1968- Evan and Sutherland created the LDS-1 (Line Drawing System) for hardware-accelerated graphics. LDS-1 is more than 100 times faster than the IBM 2250.
If the 1960s were an era of experimentation in computer graphics, the 1970s saw the birth of the personal computer. Many theories brought computer graphics to a new level of realism. In 1974, Ed Catmull discovered texture mapping, z-buffers and rendering curved surfaces in his Ph. D. thesis in computer science.

In 1971, Phong Bui-Toung at Utah developed a new shading method that was an improvement on the old Gouraud-shading. Phong's shading method accurately renders the colors on a mesh surface and produces accurate reflective surface shading, but both Gouraud and Phong's shadings have difficulties in smoothing over the outline edge of a 3D object.

In 1976, James Blinn of Utah developed a new technique called Bump mapping. Bump mapping can simulate the roughness of a surface by interpreting a grey scale map.

Today you don't need to develop your own 3D software in order to render realistic images. You don't have to be a millionaire to purchase a computer that runs 3D software. Creating computer rendering is not an impossible dream, but a reality.

How To Fix Your Slow Computer To Run Much Faster

Without a doubt today's home PC is faster than ever, so much so that even the slowest brand new computer of today has more horsepower under its hood than all the computing power combined together that was used in running the Apollo Moon Mission! That said, your brand new superfast PC with time will inevitably become a snailing slow computer that will drive you up the wall. Here's why:

Whenever you use your computer, file pieces or file fragments are formed which eventually become dislodged and misplaced from one another. This process of fragmentation occurs because of the continuous and ongoing activity of the addition and the deletion of files on your hard drive whenever your computer is performing a task. Fragmentation ultimately reduces computer performance because processing resources must be allocated to what in effect becomes a seek-n-find operation.

Basically when a file is fragmented the computer must search the entire hard disk any time that file is opened in order to piece together all the various fragments of that file to make it complete. As you can imagine this is a time consuming and labor intensive process that makes a computer run slow and forces it to run and perform in a sluggish manner.

The Process Of Defragmenting

Defragmentation is the process whereby the various different parts of a file are arranged in a contiguous fashion so that the file fragments connect to one another in sequential order until the file is a complete unit once more. Arranging files in this manner speeds up an otherwise slow computer because now that the file fragments are arranged to form a whole the computer can access and retrieve that file so much faster from its hard drive or whichever disk has just been defragmented.

Windows Comes With A Basic Disk Defragmenting Tool That Does Little To Fix A Slow Computer

All windows operating systems come installed with a basic defragmenting tool, which although won't restore your slow computer to its former speedy self will help to improve performance. Getting to the inbuilt Windows defragment tool is quite easy. All you have to do is click on Start then go to Programs, find the Accessories tab (click on that) head to Systems Tools and finally you'll get to the defragment tool. Windows' default defragmenting tool will be listed as Disk Defragmenter.

Whether you are using a third party disk defragmenter or the Windows inbuilt default tool, the process of basic defragmenting your drive is pretty much the same and couldn't be simpler. Just choose whichever drive you wish to defragment (assuming you have more than 1 drive) then click "Defragment". You can choose to analyze the disk first by clicking the "Analyze" button but this is pretty redundant since the defragmenting tool automatically goes through the process of analyzing before defragging anyway.

The Issue Of The Windows XP Paging File

There is a hidden file on your computer called the Pagefile.sys which together with the physical amount of RAM installed on your system makes up the Virtual Memory:

Paging file + Physical RAM = Virtual Memory

The paging file is really a relic of the past and its purpose was to boost the amount of actual physical RAM available on any given computer system. You see back in the day when computers were equipped with a "whopping" 64-128 megabytes (MB) of RAM, as software applications became more advanced and at the same time more resource hungry, an alternative means was needed to accommodate the required amount of RAM, until such time that hardware manufactures caught up and produced greater capacity modules of RAM.

RAM, by the way stands for, Random Access Memory and is a hardware component found in your computer as memory modules. These days however, RAM really isn't too much of an issue especially on high-end systems that can easily accommodate 16G or more of RAM. Having said that though, for the average PC owner the prudent management of RAM is still an issue, especially when one takes into account such factors as insatiable operating systems like Windows Vista (need a minimum of 1.5 gigabytes of RAM for Vista to perform at a basic tolerable level) and other resource ravenous software that is the norm of modern day computing.

Anyway back to that dinosaur of yesteryear known as the Paging File; for some reason or other Windows by default still allocates a figure of 1.5 times the physical amount of RAM to the Paging File. In other words:

Physical RAM x 1.5 = Paging File (Virtual Memory)

So in a systewhich has 4 gigs of physical RAM installed, the Paging File would take up a shattering 6 gigs of RAM! And that is not the only problem related to the Paging File here's the kicker:

By Default The Paging File Cannot Be Defragmented!

The Paging File despite its designation of "virtual memory" is nothing more than reserved hard drive space to which data is written to and retrieved periodically. By default the paging file is stored on the boot partition of windows which means that the paging file is housed in that portion of Windows that contains the operating system and its respective support folders. There is a huge problem with this situation and that is:

When the Paging File and Operating System are located on the same drive partition simultaneous access to both systems is impossible and access to the one must by necessity await completion of access to the other. This process naturally makes for a very slow computer.

Two Ways To Fix The Paging File Problem And Make Your Slow Computer Faster

1. The Hard Way To Speed Up Your Slow Running Computer

Luckily though there is a way round this bottle-neck situation; by moving the Paging File to a different partition Windows will then be able to handle I/O (input/output) requests faster because the relocation of the Paging File ensures a less competitive environment for reading and writing requests. However do note though that if you completely move the Paging File from the boot partition Windows will be unable to create a dump file (Memory.dmp) with which to write debugging information when a kernel mode Stop Error message occurs.

The way to bypass such an eventuality is to create a paging file that is stored on the boot partition and another paging file that is located on a separate partition. Windows by design will access the paging file located on the non-boot partition first before looking to the paging file housed on the boot partition.
