Difference Between Computer Ram And Laptop Ram

Difference Between Computer Ram And Laptop Ram

Author: Baring Maurice

RAM stands for random access memory and is found in all computers whether they are computer or laptops. It is the memory used to access and read and write files stored on the hard drive and rather than going to the hard drive to access a file multiple times during use, the computer places it in the RAM. This reduces the time of accessing the file so the more RAM a computer has, the faster the speed of accessing files is possible. Let us differentiate the Laptop RAM and Computer RAM:

-> Computer RAM commonly comes in DIMM (dual in-line memory module) format while the Laptop RAM comes in SO DIMM (small outline DIMM). It is designed to fit into a laptop's smaller case and both types of RAM commonly come in SDRAM, DDR SDRAM, DDR2 SDRAM and DDR3 SDRAM etc. DDR2 RAM being the most common computer RAM used. RIMM and SO RIMM are also types of RAM and the difference between the DIMM and RIMM is the pin count.

-> Size is another area in which laptop and computer RAM are different. The laptop is smaller in size so all the components must be smaller and therefore keeping this in mind SO DIMM RAM is designed. Length wise Laptop RAM is shorter in than the computer one. RAM for a computer is about 4.5 to 5 inches in length while laptop RAM is 2.5 to 3 inches.

-> Configuration is another area in which these two types of RAM differ. The number of connector pins is different in both the RAMs. Computer RAM can have between 100 and 240 pins while laptop RAM has between 72 and 200 pins in it.
