The Wide Ranging Benefits Of Cloud Computing

By: Jhon Brandon

Cloud computing is a concept that has gathered a lot of momentum in the last couple of years, with the number of IT users taking advantage of this technology that is growing by leaps and bounds. Be it multi-national enterprises or individual computer and Internet users, is asking for a bite of Cloud computing.

With applications ranging from the simple, everyday use office software such as documents and spreadsheet processors, to complex ones such as enterprise resource planning and project planning quickly becoming available through cloud computing, the scope of applicability of the cloud is vast and seemingly limitless.

There is also a reason why everyone is going 'gaga' over cloud computing; the efficiency it brings to everyday use of IT are huge. The pros of cloud computing start right at the entry level; almost everyone computer in enterprises is today connected to the Internet. The traditional method of computing demands installation and licensing of software for each of these computer systems.

Cloud computing allows each computer system and its user to use multiple applications through the cloud without the need for expensive individual licensing. It also cuts down on the need for investment in physical resources for storage and security of information as all data and software are stored on a central server by the cloud computing service provider.

Cloud computing education is also comparatively easier than that for traditional IT applications. With applications sitting online, cloud computing training and education is also completely Internet based, making it possible for users to access it from anywhere and at any time of their choosing.

This not only makes cloud computing education easier to impart but also cuts out the need for physical classes and resources. Users are simply required to connect to their online cloud computing class and acquire both theoretical and practical knowledge about the applications they intend to work on.

Another major benefit of the cloud is its real time availability. Where traditional applications restricted working periods to the time users are physically present in the office environment, cloud based applications allow users to get their work done remotely at any time and from any place. This makes for easier project planning and implementation and also cuts down on the time taken to see tasks through to completion.

Cloud computing also allows enterprises and users to compare products with much more ease. With each application available online, and without the need for physical acquisition, installation or demonstration, enterprises and users can effectively cut down on the time to deployment and implementation, which can lead to direct time savings and better returns.

While there are seemingly endless benefits to be gained from the cloud, there are also certain risk factors to be considered. One major factor is the need for vast storage resources for the service providers as they would be storing all the information on their servers on behalf of users. Security and integrity of data would also be a major cause for concern as transmissions and transactions on the internet are easier to intercept than on local networks or computers.

Despite these shortcomings, the benefits of cloud computing far outweigh the risks, clearly demonstrating why the concept is drawing so much attention and gaining in popularity.
