The best ways to avoid computer repairs

The best ways to avoid computer repairs

Computers are an essential part of our lives. We use them for the most basic of tasks, paying our bills, keeping in touch with family and friends and researching what restaurant we want to go to for dinner over the weekend. Unfortunately, as great a resource as they are, they do at times need computer repairs.

When our computer needs repair, it is stressful, but insuring good maintenance of your computer will keep computer repairs to a minimum. There are certain tips you can follow to keep your computer running smoothly. There are many software programs out there that are extremely useful, although adding too many programs to your computer may cause a need for computer repair. You want your computer to run smoothly, but putting too many programs and software on your computer can damage the running capability of your computer. The best rule to follow is to allow for 600 MB of space on your computer. Once you start to go over this, it might be necessary to add more memory to your computer to avoid costly computer repairs.

A good rule of thumb is to go through the programs on your computer monthly and delete the obsolete programs and the one's that you do not use. Maintaining your computer files will prevent computer repairs. It is also necessary to delete temporary files, or cookies, from your computer. These files take up space and may make your computer run slower than normal. Check your recycle bin each week and clean it out, as it is another way your computer stores old files that take up space.

Anti-virus software is one of the most important components in avoiding computer repairs. Viruses can intrude upon your computer and wreak havoc on the internal system. Keep your firewall updated at all times to insure these viruses do not interfere with your operating system. Check these programs often to make sure they have not expired; an expired anti-virus system is a computer repair just waiting to happen.

Many people think using the power button to shut down their computer is the proper way to close it down when they are done using it. This is not the case. The best way to minimize computer repair is to use the shut down option on the menu to close down your computer each time. By using the power switch each time, you may be setting your computer system up to crash. The only time you would want to use the power button is in the case of a program failure.

Another way to avoid costly computer repairs is to maintain power to the computer. The only time you will want to unplug your computer is if you are away for long periods of time without using it. Power surges can cause damage to computers, so it is always a good idea to use a UPS (uninterrupted power supply).

You will always want to make sure any other equipment you use with your computer is unplugged when shutting the computer down. Have a printer attached and running when you shut down your computer can be cause for computer repairs. In the event your computer does crash, you will want to have backed up all your data. Losing data is one of the worst things that can happen to a computer user so backing up data is crucial.
