By: Brad Armstrong

More than likely the computer your sitting at right now is in need of some regular maintenance to help restore speed and counteract the effects of a slow computer. While there are many things you can do without the help of a professional technician, here are a few of the best options to stop windows running slow and fix a slow running computer.

#1 First off, look at the amount of memory or Ram your computer has installed in it. Chances are if it's a computer more than 2 years old you will more than likely need a upgrade. The RAM is easy enough to come by and is being sold in a growing number of locations. But before you go and purchase any old stick of ram, make sure that it is compatible with your computer and that you are comfortable with physically opening your computer up and installing the chips yourself.

#2 Next, make sure you have adequate antivirus and spyware protection on your computer at all times. I cannot stress this point enough. If you do have antivirus and spyware protection make sure it is kept up to date and run on a very regular basis. Some programs will even have real time protection catching possible problems before they even get on your computer.

#3 After that, some serious cleanup on your computers hard drive and desktop will be a great help to prevent windows running slow. Go through and remove or uninstall any old programs or delete old files you no longer use. Files you do use such as pictures, movies, etc move off your computers hard drive using several different options including burning them to a DVD to moving everything off your computer and on to a external hard drive to fix a slow running computer.

#4 Once your computer is cleaned and everything you want to keep has been properly backed up you need to perform a disk defragmentation. This takes all the remaining files on your computer that are scattered all over and organizes them in a way that allows your computer to more quickly and accurately access them without having to physically search the entire hard drive for a few missing bits and pieces of information to fix a slow running computer.

#5  Run a system and  registry scan. This is one of the most important things you can do to counteract a slow running computer. When you scan your computer and registry with a good quality program it will actually do several things for you including accurately scan and diagnose any problems and perform the proper actions including deleting, repairing and simply re-directing any corrupted or even possibly missing registry entries.

Doing all of the things mentioned above will help you to significantly restore speed to any slow running computer. Click here to scan your slow computer now and make it run like new.
