How to Fix a Slow Computer: 5 Problems and Solutions

By: David Gaines

Your computer is running so slow that you could take a shower in the time it takes to start up in the morning. All you want to do is fix your slow computer and go about your day. The problem: You have no idea how to go about speeding up your computer. Here are five things that anyone can do to make their computer run faster.

Common Causes of a Slow Running Computer

#1 Bad Hardware - Hardware is anything physically attached to your computer. It could be a hard drive, monitor, network card, printer or any number of things that you have hooked up.

If hardware is the issue, the error will occur 100% of the time. Your programs will just not print or your Internet will drop on a regular basis. You fix the issue by replacing the hardware.

#2 Computer Overheating - Your computer has a couple of fans to keep it running cool. When it is overheated, all kinds of things go wrong.

If overheating is the issue, you may be able to feel the heat coming from your computer. You can help cool the computer by making sure the vents are free from dust and have access to air. Additionally, turning off your computer at night and setting it to "Sleep" mode when not in use will help.

#3 Not Enough Disk Space - Your computer needs at least 200MB of hard disk space to function and the more the better. Without enough space, your computer will run slow, shut down, and freeze up.

To solve this problem, use the Windows Add/Remove Program or Uninstall function to uninstall software you no longer use. Then use the Windows Disk Cleanup function to delete trash, temporary folders and other unnecessary files. Finally, use Windows Disk Defragmenter to clean up the left over files.

#4 Missing Windows Updates - Microsoft puts out updates for Windows when they recognize an error or when they wish to improve a feature. Software companies base their programs on these updates and unless you have all the updates, your computer will not run properly.

You can check for Microsoft Windows Update online using Internet Explorer. The website will automatically check your computer and it will let you know which updates are missing. After that, install the updates and restart your computer.

#5 Registry Errors - Every Windows computer has a built in registry. It allows all your programs to function quickly and smoothly. When registry errors start to build up, your computer starts to slow down.

The easiest way to resolve this problem is with a registry cleaner. While it is technically possible to fix registry errors by hand, it is not advised. However, a registry cleaner can safely and easily remove all the errors in a matter of minutes.

Computers do not slow down with age. If your computer is not running as fast as it once was, then try a registry cleaner. You will be amazed at how much faster your computer runs.
