If you are like most people then you probably have a computer running slow and seems to be taking forever to do common tasks. What is it that she causes your computer to slow down so much sometimes even the point were it locks up? We are going to discuss several things here that can greatly slow the performance of your computer and even make it so it stops functioning correctly altogether.

It could be a virus (like the recently popular Google redirect virus) or other similar malware program you may have gotten off the internet. All it takes for you to visit a website that is set up to exploit Microsoft Explorer security holes in the next time your computer restarts itself to install updates, which many computers are set to do this on a frequent basis, they will start up with the virus or other software running and you may actually see it. It could also be spyware or another malware variant (like a trojan horse or worm). Any of these programs or malicious codes could easily slow down and bog down your computer (especially a worm as that is its sole purpose).

Why do these programs result in your computer running slow? Sometimes it is the purpose of that virus or other malicious code to make your computer malfunction or run slow. More than likely, it may have turned your computer into a bot where behind the scenes it is sending e-mails with spam, similar viruses and more. Hackers and virus writers out there had been using these bots to send millions of spam e-mails and turn that into millions of dollars. One computer may not sound like a lot but when you get millions of them infected and all doing the same thing until they get caught these guys can make a lot of money.

There are even programs called worms whose sole purpose is to continuously build up and run more and more code so that your computer basically cannot do anything else. Sometimes you may not even realize that you have some spyware or something Slowing down your computer and you really have not noticed a whole lot of slowing down as of yet but it will build up. The other danger is that meanwhile not only is your computer slowing down these malicious programs could be stealing your personal data and you could very well become a victim of identity theft. So it is best to avoid websites that are known to have malicious code in the way of viruses, trojan horses, malware, spyware, worms and more.

It is also a good idea to have a good antivirus program installed and up-to-date on your computer at all times. Be sure and set it up to run a full scan at least once a week. Another item that is known to greatly slow down computers and occurs on virtually every computer out there is registry errors, hard disk issues, missing and incomplete data, etc. is registry errors and similar glitches and errors with the operating system.

Our computers run millions and millions of commands and calculations every day and we expect them to run perfectly but computers are not perfect and with all the millions of bytes of data that go in and out of the computer constantly there will be errors, accidental deletions, problematic overwriting, lost extensions, etc. and no matter who you are or what computer you used this will affect you.
