A computer is a machine that works on two set of principals. Firstly, it responds to a specific set of instructions in a well defined manner and secondly, it can execute a prerecorded list of instructions.
Modern computer can be divided into two categories: hardware and software.
The following hardware components that are required in a computer are:
1. Memory - It enables the computer to store data and programs.
2. Mass Storage Device - It enables a computer to permanently retain large amount of data. It incorporates disk drivers and tape drivers.
3. Input Device - An input device is the channel which allows you to enter data and instructions in to a computer. Usually keyboard and mouse are considered to be an input device.
4. Output Device - An output device is that which let you see what the computer has accomplished. For example, a display screen, printer or other devices.
5. Central Processing Unit - The CPU is the main component of the computer that actually executes instructions.
In addition to these components, there are many other basic components that are needed for a computer to work efficiently. Every computer, for example requires a channel that helps to transmit data from one part of the computer to another.
According to their size and power, computers are generally classified in to five categories:
1. Personal Computer - It is a small, single user computer that is based on a microprocessor. In addition to it, a personal computer has a keyboard for entering data and a monitor for displaying information. It is also provided with storage device for saving data.
2. Workstation - It is a powerful and a single user computer. A workstation is like a personal computer but it has more powerful microprocessor and a higher quality monitor.
3. Minicomputer - It is a multi-user computer that is capable of endorsing 10 to hundred of users simultaneously.
4. Mainframe - It is powerful multi-user computer that can support thousands of users simultaneously.
5. Supercomputer - As name suggests, it is an extremely fast computer that can perform hundreds of millions of instructions per second.
