We all are familiar with what computer is considered to be in contemporary sense. Now a days it is very hard to imagine a world without computers. But the term computer is much more than what we are familiar with. At its most basic, a computer can be defined as a machine which can take instructions and perform computations based on those instructions.
Computer varies from very small to very large. Some can perform million of calculations in a single second or some may take long period of time to do the same task. But theoretically, if any computer is capable of doing one task, the another computer will also be able to do so. A computer found in a wrist watch should be able to fulfill anything a supercomputer can, by providing the right instructions and sufficient memory, although it might take several years for a wrist watch to perform the same task.
Earlier computers were very large and required large amount of power to work but they were not as useful modern computers are. They were useful only for a small amount of operations. With technological advancements, the energy efficiency of the computers have been lowered immensely.
Now a days, all type of interactive devices contain their own computers. To smoothen their operations, million of devices make use of computers. Cellular telephones, GPS units, portable organizers, ATM machines and million of other devices which are impossible to access without a computer.
This type of computer is referred to as embedded computer, it is differentiated from the personal computer on the basis of its function. Embedded computer is essentially static in its function. An embedded computer is designed only for few purposes, which are relatively fixed once the computer is made.
Embedded system vary in the amount of change that can occur after their production. For example, an MP3 player is an embedded computer that have a static function but can have quite bit of interaction and changes made to it. It allow the user to change the color used, change the clock and playlist in memory.
