TESDA â€" National Assessment befalls in CdK

Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) conducted a Competency Assessment for Computer Hardware Servicing NC II and Competency Assessment for Personal Computer Operation NC II on February 14, 2009 at the assigned computer laboratories in Colegio de Kidapawan . This program catered by TESDA “seeks to determine whether the graduate or worker possesses the minimum skills and knowledge they are expected to perform in the workplace,� as stated in their official website. By exactly 7:30 o’clock in the morning, the said assessment took its place. Students from different courses such as Bachelor of Science in Computer Science (BSCS), Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BSIT) and Technical were given certain forms for them to fill-out the required information needed by the assessors. The Competency Assessment for Computer Hardware Servicing NC II has an assessment fee of PhP350.00, while Competency Assessment for Personal Computer Operation has an assessment fee of PhP285.00. Assessment fees payed by the students were collected by Ms. Vivian A. Villamor, one of the school’s faculty who facilitated on the assessment. With her was Ms. Vivian H. Buscado who also made an effort to assist. Others who helped on the said event were Mr. Alexis G. Bullanday, the computer laboratory-in-charge of CdK together with Mr. Paul P. Libag and Ms. Hyasmin May U. Delicana in cooperation and supervision of the ITE Department Head, Mr. Camilo A. Andi, MIT.

The Department Head, Mr. Camilo A. Andi, MIT strictly imposed to all students under his department that it should be taken, otherwise their clearances will not be signed thus failing to take the final examination on March 2-4, 2009 for graduating students and March 17-20, 2009 for undergraduates. This pronouncement he made was supported by the reason given by Ms. Vivian A. Villamor saying that this assessment catered by TESDA, since students of the following courses do not have board exams to undergo, students should be assessed to determine if they are competent enough to this field of work. Then if they pass this assessment, they will be given a certificate which will serve as a means of showing how competent they are in this field. This certificate also gives a basis that the name listed on this had undergone such assessment which is a fundamental document in searching for a job. On the part of Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering (BSCoE) as a computer related course, students under this course are not required to undergo such assessment, however, if they are willing to, then they will be granted of this assessment - as explained.

In the middle of the actual event at the hardware laboratory where the assessment for Computer Hardware servicing was held, Cristine Mae B. Jaso a BSIT â€" 2A student accidentally exploded a power supply of a system unit after assembling its parts and plugging it on an electrical socket for testing. Ms. Cristine, disappointed, was then called up by Mr. Alexis G. Bullanday and Mr. Camilo A. Andi and comforted her after her mishap, explaining that it was not her fault why it exploded. During an interview, Mr. Alexis G. Bullanday said that last Friday, a day before the assessment is to be conducted, the hardware laboratory was used and some of the system units were not properly remodeled and this might have been the reason why the power switch selector of the power supply used by Ms. Cristine was set in 115V instead of 230V. By the assessor's compassionate demeanor, Ms. Cristine repeated this part and did it successfully. In the computer laboratory 2 and 3, students were busy accomplishing the tasks given to them using Microsoft Word, Microsoft Powerpoint and Microsoft Excel. They were given a sheet containing instructions which were to be followed strictly. The total number of students who took the Assessment for Computer Hardware Servicing NC II was clearly expressed by 19 while the total number of students who took the Assessment for Personal Computer Operation NC II was represented by 80. On February 21, 2009 another batch of students were given the chance to take an Assessment in Personal Computer Operation NC II with a total number of 26 students assessed by Mr. Edris K. Pagocag.

Below are the Bases to determine whether a student is competent or not after undergoing this Assessment:

Under Competency Assessment Agreement, the following are the Units of Competency to be Assessed in Computer Hardware Servicing NC II:

1. Install computer systems and networks
2. Diagnose and troubleshoot computer systems
3. Configure computer systems and networks
4. Maintain computer systems and networks

Under Self â€" Assessment Guide, the following are the Units of Competency to be Assessed in Personal Computer Operation NC II:

1. Operate a word processing application
2. Operate E-mail and search the Web using the Internet
3. Operate a spreadsheet application
4. Operate a presentation package

In an interview with Engr. Kiril Van A. Aguilar he said, once the student fails to accomplish one of the four units of competency to be assessed, whether it is in CHS NC II or PC Operation NC II, the student will be automatically marked as “not competent� as mentioned. Therefore, students should be careful and must be diligent in focusing themselves to succeed in doing the tasks. At a later date when the National Assessment was done already, various reactions were heard from students. Some said the assessment was just easy as long as you have the courage and will to do the job and always making sure that you are following the accurate instructions given, but some also said that it was really difficult. The assessors were really strict as expected especially those who were assigned in CHS NC II. Of course, this is not an easy work to do for many students but then we salute all those who took the assessment for a remarkable attempt which resulted to a job well done for those who passed.
