The So-Called PC Repair - Delete and Re-image

The So-Called PC Repair - Delete and Re-image

Author: Bill Arnoldi

This "syndrome" in the Computer repair sector rates close near the top of my frustration list of practices by many Computer repair "Gurus". I am referring to the practice of a few amateur PC Computer repair techs, and even a couple of big company franchises, taking the easy way out to restore a PC by telling the client that they have to replace the hard drive and Re-install everything.

Hi, I am Bill Arnoldi, owner of FireBall Tech PC Repair in Tucson, Arizona. In my mind, I am still trying to work out how someone can call destroying and reimaging a "fix" for any PC repair trouble. On my list of cures, that is my last solution. More Often Than Not it sort of leaves me feeling a bit shot down. But, since I rarely have to ever resort to that, I think only three or four times in the last eighteen years, it is not a huge issue for me.

So why do too many PC repair "Gurus" find it so easy to decide that destroying the customer's data and formating their hard drive as a answer to a Computer repair trouble? Here are a few of the reasons.

1. They really do not know how to fix the trouble. This is the number one rationality. Most of the time this is the method most often applied by techs that have little ability in actually troubleshooting and repairing PC Computers, you know who they are. Its the person, frequently barely out of high school, that grew up working with PCs and constructed their own gaming system so he thinks they are adept at restoring PCs, or the individual that studied on their own and proceeded to get a certificate because they go most of the questions correct on a piece of paper. Any way it goes, they just don't have the skill and this is their sole remedy to a somewhat challenging problem. What is worse is they are taking advantage of the customer that is believing their "expert" determination that this is the ONLY remedy to their issue, oftentimes leaving the client with a feeling of regret for not having backed up all their data, written documents and pictures and losing them because of the Re-install.

2. The faster the fix, the more money they can make. It takes more effort and time to troubleshoot and attempt repair paths on a Computer with compound problems. Often a consumer is searching for the best price for the PC Computer fix. In order to remain competitive and sustain a mass of business, a Computer repair company may fall back on to the erase and reimage of a Computer because it uses significantly less time than actually solving the matter. Thus, they may make more money by engaging the quickest road to getting the PC Computer up and running again. Again this is not commonly in the consumer's best interest because they end up by and large losing their information and needing to Reinstall all of their software applications on their own.

3. Laziness. This represents a small amount of both of the previous plus a terrible mental attitude, but is in truth self-explanatory. The Computer tech or the company doctrine is to take the easy way out, head off possible ramifications, get the Computer out the door repaired, and do so with the littlest effort, time and expense. It is a "repair mill" mind-set. Generally, they just don't worry about the consumer. Rather, it is all about whatsoever is simplest and most moneymaking. Again, the customer becomes an uninformed victim of inexpert business attitudes and patterns.

A comment reply by a self-alleged Computer repair guru on a forum posting by some other newbie technician asking "What's a good turnaround time on PC Computer fix for consumers?" read the succeeding: "It really depends on patronage, If you want to do this in a full time extent, you should be able to do this in about 8 to 12 hours. If you just reimage the PC it shouldn't take more than 2 hours." I guess we know how he operates.

A trustworthy computer repair tech can conclude about any problem without resorting to wiping a hard drive and reinstalling the OS, also referred to as reimaging a PC Computer. A PC repair tech with a real concern for the customer's best interest will use everything in their arsenal to repair a problem before resorting to a complete reimaging of a PC system.

In my own Tucson Computer repair company, I can site many instances wherein a customer brought in a Computer to me because they were told by another PC repair individual that it was essential to reimage the customer's Computer ending in complete loss of their data, only to ascertain that indeed, it could be repaired without any loss. Yes, sometimes it costs more than reimaging a system as a result of the longer repair operations, but the customer more frequently than not would rather pay a little more than lose all their data, and all too frequently, their treasured libraries of family memories on the Desktop Computer in digital photos.

My advice to consumers is to inquire around and ascertain the reputation of the PC Computer repair technician. Don't be unguarded and easily assume a Desktop Computer repair technician's statement that a total wipe and Restore of the hard drive is essential. Drill them on the rationalities why it is essential, and what the choices are. At the very least, always tell a PC Computer repair person or company that they should reach you for authorization before formatting your hard drive and reimaging your Computer. Be mindful as well, that numerous of the large franchise operations use a business model wherein a series of mandated stripped-down troubleshooting gradations are undertaken before the company policy prescribes a total Reinstall of the PC Computer is mandatory for trouble resolution.
