Most of the time, when we replace an item we simply throw the old one away. But when it comes to electronics, this is easier said than done. It is not so simple as throwing away a computer, or a cell phone, or an Mp3 player. First of all, there is the environmental factor to consider. Throwing away a heaping ton of metal and wire only to let it rot in some landfill is certainly not good for the earth. It would be great if the same store that decided to sell an IBM notebook would start a program to take used ones back in, much like glass beer bottle recycling programs in most states, but alas no such system exists yet. What's more, each of these items represents a serious amount of cold, hard cash. Throwing something in the trash that cost you $500 dollars a few short years ago is no easy task. It feels like somehow there should be a way to salvage some remaining value out of that old piece of equipment. But as much as you would like to sell the IBM notebook that you are about to replace, or that 2-year-old MP3 player that just would not hold enough music files, this is easier said than done, right?

Wrong. In order to sell an IBM notebook, you need little more than access to the Internet. You can take to routes, more or less. The independent route would have you sell the IBM notebook yourself. You can post an ad on a number of online classified websites like Craig's List or Facebook Marketplace, and wait for all of the offers to come rolling in. The advantages to this method are that you could potentially get more cash, as people will be competing for your computer and you do not have to pay any kind of commission to a third party. But there are a number of downsides to this method, as well. First of all, you have to spend the time and effort to sort through all of the ads and decide which people are serious potential buyers and which people are potential robbers or psychopaths! Then you have to spend time potentially meeting up with each buyer, and letting them check out your computer for themselves. Once someone decides to buy the computer, you have to either get them to hand over a large amount of cash, you have to hope that the check they write you does not bounce. And then, if your computer breaks down, you may be receiving an angry and accusatory phone call from the buyer demanding that you compensate them. What a nightmare! Suddenly, deciding to sell an IBM laptop on your own seems foolish!

This is why it is better to go with the other option you have at your disposal – selling the computer to a third-party website. This allows you to get cash for your computer immediately, and not have to worry about any of the above issues.
