How to Fend Off Losing Your Data to the Lackadaisical Computer Repair Guy

This issue in the Computer repair industry places close near the top of my frustration list of practices by many PC repair techs. I am referring to the pattern of a couple of unskilled PC repair techs, and even a couple of big company franchises, taking the easy way out to restore a Computer by informing the computer owner that they must format the hard drive and Reimage everything.

Hi, I am Bill Arnoldi, proprietor of FireBall Tech PC Computer Repair in Tucson, Arizona. In my mind, I am still trying to figure out how someone can call destroying and re-imaging a "fix" for any PC Computer repair trouble. On my list of redresses, that is my final resort. Generally it kind of leaves me feeling a bit defeated. But, as I seldom have to ever resort to that, I think only three or four times in the last eighteen years, it is not a crucial matter for me.

So why do so many PC repair "Gurus" find it so easy to end up ruining the client's data and wiping their hard drive as an answer to a Desktop Computer repair problem? Here are a couple of of the rationalities.

1. They really do not know how to remedy the problem. This is the number one rationality. Most of the time this is the method most often utilized by technicians that have little ability in really troubleshooting and fixing Desktop Computers, you know who they are. Its the individual, oftentimes barely out of high school, that grew up fiddling with PC computers and built their own gaming system so he reckons they are an expert at fixing PCs, or the person that home studied the certification books and carried on to get a certificate because they answered all the questions right on a piece of paper. Any way it goes, they just don't have the experience and this is their sole remedy to a somewhat tough problem. What is even worse is they are taking advantage of the customer that is relying on their "expert" decision that this is the ONLY answer to their trouble, oftentimes bequeathing the client with a feeling of regret for not having backed up all their information, documents and pictures and losing them due to the Re-image.

2. Time and money equals profits. It takes longer to troubleshoot and try remedial actions on a PC with compound troubles. Often a consumer is looking for the lowest cost for the PC fix. In order to remain competitive and preserve a mass of business, a PC Computer repair company may resort to the format and reimage of a Desktop Computer because it requires significantly less time than really resolving the problem. Thus, they could make a lot more money by selecting the fastest path to getting the Desktop Computer up and running again. Again this is not usually in the customer's best interest because they end up by and large losing their information and needing to Re-install all of their software programs on their own.

3. Laziness. This comprises a bit of both of the preceding plus an awful attitude, but is in truth self-explanatory. The PC Computer technician or the company doctrine is to take the easy way out, head off potential ramifications, get the PC out the door fixed, and do so with the least effort, time and expense. It is a "repair mill" outlook. In general, they just don't care about the customer. Rather, it is all about whatsoever is easiest and most bankable. Again, the consumer becomes an unknowing victim of inexpert business attitudes and practices.

A comment answer by a self-asserted PC repair guru on a forum posting by another newbie technician asking "What's a good turnaround time on Computer fix for customers?" read the following: "It really counts on clientele, If you want to do this in a full time extent, you should be able to do this in about 8 to 12 hours. If you just reimage the Desktop Computer it shouldn't take more than 2 hours." I guess we know how he operates.

A proper computer repair tech can solve about any problem without resorting to erasing a hard drive and restoring the OS, also referred to as reimaging a Desktop Computer. A PC repair tech with a genuine concern for the consumer's best interest will use everything in their arsenal to repair a problem before resorting to a total reimaging of a PC system.

In my own Tucson PC repair company, I can site many instances wherein a client brought a Desktop Computer to me because they were told by another PC repair individual that it was inevitable to reimage the customer's Desktop Computer resulting in total loss of their data, only to find that indeed, it could be fixed without any loss. Yes, sometimes it costs more than than reimaging a system due to the longer repair operations, but the customer more often than not would preferably pay a little more than lose all their information, and all too often, their treasured libraries of family memories on the Desktop Computer in digital pictures.

My suggestion to consumers is to inquire around and ascertain the reputation of the PC Computer repair technician. Don't be gullible and easily accept a PC repair technician's assertion that a total wipe and Reinstall of the hard drive is necessary. Drill them on the rationalities why it is necessary, and what the options are. At the very least, always tell a PC Computer repair person or company that they should reach you for authorization before formatting your hard drive and reinstalling your PC. Be conscious as well, that some of the huge franchise operations use a business model wherein a series of mandated tokenish troubleshooting gradations are undertaken before the company policy prescribes a complete Reinstall of the Computer is mandatory for problem resolution.
